Gilleon Booth Museum Show

R. Tom Gilleon has a one man exhibition opening January 28, 2012 at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville Georgia. The exhibition will run through May 27, 2012 and includes over 30 paintings, a number of which have been released by The Greenwich Workshop as Fine Art Editions.

Smith: Peoples' Choice (again and again) in Wildlife Art

The people have spoken, and they are saying they love wildlife artist Dan Smith's art. Our most recent Fine Art Edition from Dan, Raven Rhetoric, was selected for the People's Choice Award at this year's Western Visions Art Show at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole.

More recently, Smith's Riverside Siesta was chosen by attendees at The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum's Small Works, Great Wonders show for the Cynthia Post Buyers' Choice Award.

This is all in the same year that the Autry National Center awarded Dan with their Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award for Heavy Hitters which debuted at this year's Masters of the American West. This work is also available as a Fine Art Edition from the Greenwich Workshop.

Collectors will also have the chance to learn more about Dan in the January issue of Western Art Collector. We understand not only is there a feature article, but that one of Smith's paintings will be featured on the cover. Artist James C. Christensen’s newest book, Lehi’s Dream, has just been published by Deseret Book. The Greenwich Workshop is proud to publish a Fine Art Open Edition print of the book’s featured painting: Desirable Above All Other Fruit, signed by the artist and available now.
“Tree of Life imagery and its symbolism are present in almost every world creation myth and mythology,” explains artist James C. Christensen. “References, in one form of another, can be found in the Book of Genesis, Chinese and Norse mythology, Hinduism and pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures.”
“Lehi’s Dream (1 Nephi 8) is a wonderful example of this and the Tree of Life is a powerful image. The story and the painting remind us that the fruits of the tree are available to everyone that tries to live a good life. There is a path to be followed and at the end there is the Tree, the love of God, and his fruits are there for all of us to enjoy.”

Greenwich Workshop collectors will also have access to a very limited, collector’s edition of Lehi’s Dream, bound in leather and accompanied by an original stone lithograph that is signed, titled, and numbered by James C. Lehi’s Dream is the second book collaboration between Christensen and author Robert Millet. Their first book was Parables, produced by The Greenwich Workshop Press for Deseret Book in 1999.

Dean Mitchell- A Modern Day Vermeer

Scott Gustafson is Author and Illustrator of a New Middle-Reader Book

Greenwich Workshop artist Scott Gustafson is both author and illustrator of a new book for ages 9-12 called Eddie: The Lost Youth of Edgar Allen Poe. Published last August by Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers, the book is filled with black and white illustrations of the young life of the famous and sometimes macabre writer.
The cover illustration won the artist a place on the wall in the prestigious Society of Illustrators Original Art Show which opens on Thursday, October 27th. On Saturday, October 29, Scott will read from his book at Books of Wonder, 18 West 18th St. in NYC. Congratulations Scott!

Just a quick note to let you know that from Sunday to late Tuesday of this week, our office in Seymour was without power. Everyone here is fine, though most of us still do not have power in our homes. We are slightly less groomed, but that is the worst of it.

Our phones and e-mails are working again. We would ask that any communications you attempted to make with us for the past few days be repeated. Our phones were not taking messages, and any one that tried to call received a busy signal. Our fax machine was not working either.

It appears that a good number of the e-mails sent to us came through, but we would suggest that you resend them as some may have bounced back.

Curt Walters Wins Prix De West Buyer's Choice

Greenwich artists commanded a great deal of attention at this year's National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Prix De West Invitational Art Sale and Exhibition.

Curt Walter's walked away with the Nona Jean Hunsley Buyer's Choice Award for his stunning work, Enigmatic Long House. Chris Blossom, Steve Hanks, Dan Smith and Morgan Weistling sold-out their paintings at the show. Terpning "Cleopatra" Original tops $125,000 at auction

When the original poster artwork by Howard Terpning for the 1963 epic "Cleopatra" was unveiled, star Rex Harrison was incensed that it only depicted two of the film's three top-billed stars, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton - then the most famous couple in the world. Harrison sued, and 20th Century Fox had the artist add Harrison into his original painting. The estimates for the painting ranged from $60,000 - $80,000. It sold for $126,000.

Dan Smith Featured in Art of the West

The May/June issue of Art of the West magazine features an article on Daniel's studio. This is one of the magazine's most popular features. His studio is small, cozy and inside the home but it is unique in that it extends beyond the physical structure to include the surrounding wilderness. Wildlife abounds outside the studio and provides the inspiration for his work.

Living in close proximity to the wildlife subjects Daniel paints is one of the plusses of living on the north side of a mountain deep in the trees with an extended winter season.

James C. Christensen is the subject of a new documentary by Barry McLerran and Rick Sout that will premiere on April 18 at 6pm (Mountain Time) on BYU-TV. The hour-long documentary explores his life, family, artistic inspirations, and his prolific career from his early musical talents to his life as a fine artist and professor. Collectors of Christensen will recognize many of their limited edition prints up to, and including, the arist at work on the 2011 release "The Chess Match." Jenny Pont, Guy Combes' aunt and Simon Combes sister was the Kenyan location producer for Best Foreign Language Film In A Better World. Some the beautiful establishing shots of Kenya were even shot on Soysambu, Guy and Simon's Kenyan home. Many of Guy and Simon's paintings, such as Guy Combes' Tango feature the Soysambu landscape.

Greenwich Workshop Fine Art Editions Stand In for Originals in Collectors' Homes

We were happy to see two of our Fine Art Editions in a John Geraghty article, featuring the lovely home of Darlene and Durwood Barnett, in Western Art Collector's November 2010 issue. The Masterwork Canvas edition of Mian Situ's "The Golden Mountain" at 60 x 49 (unframed!) dominated a two-story stairway and a Howard Terpning Fine Art Canvas, "The Teachings of My Grandmother" graces the wall over the fireplace. The Barnetts fell in love with both originals early in their collecting at a Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale but their names were not chosen from the intent-to-purchase boxes. When The Grenwich Workshop published these two paintings, the Barnetts purchased them and hung them in Gerald Montgomery frames in their home. Now serious Western Art collectors, their featured home, photographed by Francis Smith, is filled with original paintings and sculpture by top artists.

The Greenwich Workshop Wins Gold Award in 23rd Annual Gold Ink Awards Competition

The Greenwich Workshop, Inc. won the 2010 Gold Ink Award in the Digital Printing, Specialty category for its submission of James C. Christensen's Angel Unaware limited edition fine art print. The industry's premier print competition is sponsored by Publishing Executive, Printing Impressions and Book Business magazines.

This year's Gold Ink Award winners were chosen from over 1,200 submitted entries. Judging was based on print quality, technical difficulty and overall visual effect. The eleven judges included directors of print production and quality control from major printing houses, professional photographers and graphic artists.

Kudos to our in-house production team headed by Bob Hixon and Dave Grant who have made The Greenwich Workshop an award-winning producer of fine art editions.

Steve Hanks Commission Graces Award-Winning Bookjacket

About a year ago, we got a call from a book designer at Viking Penguin who was looking for Steve Hanks. One of Steve's collectors had recommended him for a book jacket commission.

The book, Bill Warrington's Last Chance, a first novel by James King, is about an elderly man who has discovered he has Alzheimer's and wants to reunite his three estranged children one last time to give them a message before he loses all his memory to the disease. He sets out on a road trip from Ohio to California with his 15 year-old granddaughter to accomplish this.

Steve Hanks agreed to do the commission and the book, shown here, is now an Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award winner. We can't help but think that the Hanks jacket painting helped many potential readers buy the book. The inside scoop: We heard from a reliable source that the artist served as the model for the painting.

Gilleon Donates MuseumEdition Canvas To Cancer Institute

Tom Gilleon donated a MuseumEdition Greenwich Workshop Fine Art Edition of one of his iconic tepee paintings to Benefis Sletten Cancer Institute in Great Falls in honor of Andy Anderson, who is undergoing treatment there for brain and lung cancer. Tom and Laurie Gilleon and Andy and Dottie Anderson met almost three decades ago when the Andersons were working at the Diamond Bar X Guest Ranch near Augusta, and the Gilleons were visiting from California for an artists' workshop. The Giclee, titled "Tribal Tripartite," showing three tepees — each from a different tribe — now hangs outside the office of Anderson's doctor, Bryan Martin.

Scott Gustafson's "Confabulation of Dragons" Wins more Awards!

Congratulations to Scott Gustafson whose Confabulation of Dragons was just nominated for a Chesley Award in the Best Product Illustration category: Greenwich Workshop limited edition giclee canvas. The competition is all very talented so the nomination alone is quite an honor.

"Confabulation" came from the artist's fascination with English words used to describe groups of particular animals like a pride of lions, a pod of whales, a clutter of spiders. "In that vein," said the artist, "I wondered what a gathering of dragons might be called." Gustafson stumbled upon the word "confabulate" whose Webster dictionary definition includes: "To replace fact with fantasy in memory." Thus a confabulation of dragons was born.

Also, we just got word that "Confab" was one of only 20 paintings nominated for an "Illie Award," which is an award offered up by the Illustration Exchange and their convention, IlluXCon. Recently, Howard Terpning was honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Terpning attended the school on the GI Bill after his service in the Marine Corps.

Blossom Wins Prix De West!

Do you know how outstanding your (albeit west of the Mississippi river) maritme painting has to be to win the Prix De West? Christopher Blossom's Sunrise in the Golden Gate; Downeaster “Benjamin F. Packard" pulled that off this past weekend against a field of 110 artists who presented 346 paintings in Oklahoma City, OK.

The Prix de West art exhibition and sale, hosted by the National Cowboy and Heritage Museum, is America's premiere sprintime artshow. Each year at Prix de West, distinguished honors are selected by the Prix de West committee, the artists and buyers. The top honor is the Prix de West Purchase Award; the work chosen to be purchased for the Museum’s permanent collection. The artist receives the purchase price and a cash award of $5,000. Christopher Blossom was honored for the first time with the prestigious Prix de West Purchase Award medallion.

Sunrise in the Golden Gate; Downeaster “Benjamin F. Packard,” priced at $37,000 is a 24” x 38” oil on linen that catches the Benj. F. Packard sailing ship passing through the Golden Gate and into San Francisco Bay. Built in 1883, the Packard was a class of ship that represents the last of the large, wooden full-rigged ships.

Blossom follows a line of highly accomplished artists, including his grandfather, Earl, and father, David. He attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City and worked in the Industrial Design Studio of Robert Bourke, where he learned to accurately interpret blueprints. It is experience that plays into every painting of watercraft. He has been participating in Prix de West for 21 years and is a multiple award winner. Blossom is a three-time recipient (2001, 2007 and 2008) of the Robert Lougheed Memorial Award—an honor voted upon by participating artists.

Alan Bean: National Aviation Hall of Fame

On July 17, 2010 Navy Capt. Alan Bean (Ret), Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 12, Fourth Man to Walk on the Moon, Commander of Skylab 3, and the First Artist on Another World will be enshrined into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, OH. The Hall of Fame, located inside the National Museum of the United States Air Force, honors the legacies of America's air and space pioneers—the individuals whose ambition, innovation and inspiration gave wings to mankind's pursuit of flight.

“This is the Oscar night of aviation,” said NAHF Enshrinement Director Ron Kaplan. “Along with the air and space pioneers being enshrined, we have some giants in aviation history lined up to present each honoree.”

Alan will be introduced by fellow Apollo 12 astronaut, Capt. Richard “Dick” Gordon, (Ret). In Alan Bean’s Conrad, Gordon and Bean, The Fantasy all three of the Apollo 12 crew share a highly desired, but never to be moment on the surface of the moon.

It was an honor and a privilege for The Greenwich Workshop
to have published the work of this contemporary western artist.

James Reynolds was born in a Standard Oil lease house in 1926 and raised in Taft, California. As a boy, he spent summers at his grandmother’s Nevada City hotel, which was situated just beyond the infamous Donner Pass and literally above the south fork of the Yuba River, supported by stilts. In Nevada City he experienced firsthand the remnants of the Old West and heard the stories of that time.

Although he dabbled with drawing during grade school, Reynolds didn’t investigate it seriously until after World War II. The trip home from China was a long and boring one; luckily, the sailor on the bunk beside him had a painting kit. Reynolds took to it immediately and, upon returning to America, enrolled in the Kahn Institute of Art in Beverly Hills. Reynolds soon found work in Hollywood. For almost two decades, he sketched storyboards and sets for most of the major studios. Finally, after a particularly grueling assignment designing and helping to apply a body of tattoos for the film version of The Illustrated Man, he moved to Sedona, Arizona, and never looked back.

Reynolds is considered to be one of the finest artists of the Western experience. He was a member of the National Academy of Western Art (NAWA) and of the Cowboy Artists of America. In 1992, for his painting Arizona Cowboys, NAWA awarded Reynolds the Gold Award for Oil Painting, the Nona Jean Hulsey Buyer’s Choice Award, and the Prix de West. Reynolds’ other honors include Gold Awards from NAWA, and, from the Cowboy Artists of America, gold medals for best oil painting, Colt Awards, two George Phippen Memorial Awards and the Thomas Moran Memorial Award at the Autry National Center's "Masters of the American West Exhibition".

John Buxton

Greenwich Workshop artist John Buxton won third prize in the International Artist Magazine competition in the People and Figures category for his painting, The Fording Place. The competition will appear in Issue 64, December/January 2009 and will include a description of the artist’s inspiration, design strategy and working process.

The popularity of Buxton’s artwork and the importance of the 18th century Eastern Woodland frontier can be noted in John’s inclusion in premiere Western art events in 2008 such as the Autry National Center’s Masters of the American West, and the 2008 Eiteljorg Museum’s Quest for the West where The Fording Place was sold and where three additional Buxton paintings were featured.

The artist lives in western Pennsylvania, which formed part of the western frontier in the mid-1700s where the French and English traded with natives, including tribes that made up the great Iroquois confederacy. A graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, he pursued a successful illustration career of 31 years before becoming a full-time historical painter. “Right here in my backyard, so to speak, so much has happened that influenced the course of a developing America of the 18th century. How could I not want to paint it?”

John Buxton is famous for his detailed historic accuracy. Everything from the obvious (clothing, weapons, accoutrements) to the subtle (posture, body art, jewelry) is carefully researched and then rendered. “I had really enjoyed working with the book division of The National Geographic Society,” says Buxton, “where I learned their belief in going the extra mile to be sure, through research, that the artwork is as correct as possible — that it will stand the test of time.” The subtext in some Buxton paintings is the inevitable result of Native American and European/American cultures mixing. Native people became more and more dependent on benefits and comforts gained through active trade with white men.

The Fording Place
It is summer in the Iroquois territory and a small group has set up their temporary camp on the banks of a river, where the fish and game are plentiful. At the end of the season the men and the women will move to higher ground, where more permanent camps keep them out of reach of the winter floods. While women took care of camp chores, men spent most of their time hunting or preparing to hunt, if not preparing for war against some neighboring group. The men of The Fording Place set out across their river in search of yet another unknown daily adventure.

Your artistic education began at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, and continued at the Massachusetts College of Art and Boston University. How do American and Chinese approaches to fine art education differ?

While I was there, Chinese schools still followed the Soviet method of art education: basic training in drawing, painting, sculpting, all in European, Classical and realist styles. The system was very uniform and every student painted in a similar style and shared the same views on the art of painting.
When I moved to America I pursued contemporary art, which was quite a new experience. Each student and each professor at the Massachusetts College of Art had his own ideas and his own favorite artists. Using each student’s favorite artists, our professors would guide us through the process of learning to paint. This personalized method opened intellectual and artistic doors for me.

Your early work spanned the spectrum of subject matter from still life to figurative to formal portraiture. What motivates you now to paint Native Americans and the American West?

After graduating I returned to my realist roots, painting primarily illustrations, figurative work and formal commissions in order to make a living. The work was not satisfying, and I longed for another direction, something free and brave that would tell a story. It was around this time that I began visiting the outdoor Wampanoag Indian museum at Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts. The Wampanoag who worked at the museum were obliging and happy to educate me about their present situation, as well as their history and culture. I was fortunate enough to build friendships with several of these workers, and several agreed to model for me. My first model brought with him not only full historical dress, but a bow and arrow, and more stories and information about the Wampanoag than I could have ever hoped for. My sessions painting this man were like lessons for me, lessons in the history of this country and the present difficulties faced by some of its citizens. I became a passionate advocate for the Wampanoag and Eastern Indians in general, and have never looked back.

Woodland Warrior

You spent several years in field research among American Indian tribes from the East Coast to the Rocky Mountains. The subject of several of your earlier works was the people of Tibet. Do you see similarities between the two groups?

As a matter of fact, I do. The Tibetan paintings were created after a trip I took several years ago. While I was there, I was astonished to discover the resemblance between certain Tibetan and Native American customs. One tradition practiced by the Tibetans is almost identical to a Navajo traveling ritual. Before the steady push by Europeans and Americans across the West, most of the Native Americans were, like the Tibetans, nomadic. Their religions seem very similar as well: both are earth-based, nurturing and grateful for the bounty of the earth.

Are you inspired by other painters of American Western subjects?

Oh, very much! So much so, in fact, that I will have to list several favorites for each era of Western art. Before the widespread use of the camera, George Catlin and Karl Bodmer lived almost as anthropologists in the field, documenting the lives and culture of the Plains Indians in their drawings and paintings.
Later on, Charles Marion Russell and Frederic Remington brought Western art to a new artistic level. During the 19th century the life of the average Native American changed drastically, and the works of Remington and Russell make up the majority of historical information we have left about the earlier years. Each man was a skilled historian, and to this day Remington’s work shows how the Native Americans with whom he worked rode and treated their horses.
For contemporary art, it’s got to be Howard Terpning. Howard is so serious about his research, and his passion is so deep that it shows in every aspect of his work. His understanding of the subject gives his paintings a real authenticity and his skill as a painter turns the scenes into fine art. When you look at Howard’s paintings, you see the marriage of passion for Native American culture and a deep knowledge of painting.

Of all your awards and recognitions, which artistic accomplishment has made you proudest?
There are two. In 1998 I won the People’s Choice and Best of Show awards from the American Society of Portrait Artists. The Oil Painters of America also honored me with their Award of Excellence. These two associations are very well-respected and to win recognition from them is a great honor.

We’ve seen two paperback collections of your work by Tianjin People’s Fine Arts Publishing House in China. Do you have any plans to release a more comprehensive collection for your English-speaking audience?

That’s my plan! With luck, in the next two or three years I can put all my recent work together in a book. The Chinese books are much older work with lots of different subjects, but this book would be primarily my American Indian work. As I paint, lately, I think of how what I’m creating will fit in the book: I want to include a variety of scenes, showing all aspects of life from motherhood to hunting.

Where have all the heroes gone?

Last Saturday I learned one of our local star athletes had accidentally shot himself (late night at a bar, in the leg) with an unregistered hand gun. It was icing on the cake for the 31-year-old’s multi-month, hubris-inspired run at tanking a recently inked $35 million contract to play ball.

I also learned Saturday that a friend of the Workshop’s, Major General David “Davy” M. Jones passed away.

When Jones was 28, he sat in the pilot’s seat of a B-25 on the deck of the carrier Hornet preparing to launch on Doolittle’s raid on Japan. Due to early detection off the Japanese coast, the aircraft would be departing hundreds of miles sooner than planned. They could no longer reach the safe airfields in unoccupied China, as planned. "You knew when you started that we didn't have enough fuel to make it, period. But you couldn't think about that," he said.

A few years later, now the star athlete’s age, he was too was busy rebelling against the authorities (of Stalag Luft III, a German prisoner of war camp) surreptitiously digging the clandestine tunnel “Harry” immortalized in the film The Great Escape. Jones, who in 1936 was commissioned in the cavalry reserve, went on to become a major figure in numerous Air Force jet development and test programs. He ran a nuclear bomb wing in NATO at the height of the Cold War. He commanded the Air Force Eastern Test Range at Cape Canaveral during the Apollo program. As he liked to say himself, he went from horses to Mach II.

He cosigned a number of the William S. Phillips’ editions we published depicting the Doolittle Raid. It was during these signings that we met. Into the Arms of the Dragon (above) actually depicts Jones as he bails out of his faltering aircraft over China (which was farther than he believed thought he would get, thanks to a providential tailwind). We painted that image specifically for General Jones. Sadly, when it came time to sign this particular image, he wasn’t well enough to do so. We did get the chance to honor him with the image, though.

My two boys met him at one of these signings, and I hope that one day they will come to appreciate that (though it will probably always mean more to me). Better yet, I hope that they have the opportunity to be inspired by someone of the same caliber (that they too are excited for their children to meet) in the hopes that, one day, this next generation will hold onto the values and achievements that individual represents.

Cassandra Barney at Autism Research Fundraiser

This weekend, Greenwich Workshop artist Cassandra Barney makes a very special visit to Youngstown, Ohio. Barney was asked to be the guest artist at this year's Rich Center for Autism fundraiser event. The Rich Center was founded in 1995 with the mission of improving the lives of individuals with autism and their families through creativity and education. Cassandra will be speaking at the event and her original painting My Gift is the cornerstone of the evening's auction. Josh Spies Wins 2008 Federal Duck Stamp Competition

One of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a wildlife artist is to have their artwork chosen to adorn the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp. More commonly known as the “Duck Stamp”, it is the primary funder of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System land acquisition and conservation program. Since 1934, the Federal Duck Stamp program has raised more than $750 million to purchase nearly six million acres of wildlife habitat.

Josh edged out a field of over 270 entries in this year’s selection contest. His painting of a long-tailed duck and decoy lends a narrative element to the image that embodies the concept for which the stamp was created. The 1967-1968 Duck Stamp featured the species when they were referred to as “Old Squaws,” making long tailed ducks the first water fowl to be featured as stamps under two names.
Hats off to Josh on this singular achievement!

Homecoming for Alan Bean

After waiting out the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Ike on his hometown of Galveston, Texas, Alan Bean recently returned home. Far from defeated by the damage to the area he knows and loves, Alan is back to business as usual. When I spoke to him earlier today he had his priorities straight: "If it hasn't got to do with art or space," he said, "I don't do it. There are men on my roof right now, trying to remove a fallen tree from the second floor and I'm not even watching. I just hope they don't drop it. If they do, we'll deal with it later, but for now I've got my hands full."

He certainly has--an exhibition of his work just opened at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Library in Austin, Texas. This coming summer, for the 40th anniversary of the lunar landing, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum will unveil a major exhibition of Alan's paintings. That same month, a new book of his collected works will hit store shelves. We don't blame you, Alan, if you haven't got time to chat!

Greenwich Workshop team member Joe Landry leads something of a double life. In addition to working as our all-around web guy, his plays have been produced across the country, and include It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, Reefer Madness, Eve & Co., Beautiful, Hollywood Babylon, and Numb. His other adaptations include Death in Venice and Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play.

Mr. Landry attended Playwright's Horizons/NYU and is the founder of Second Guess Theatre Company. His produced screenplays include Who Would Jesus Date?.

At one of the first shows Judy attended, the organizers of the original painting event took the effort to comment on the "time it must have taken to paste all those animal hairs" to her artwork. The stark realism of her patented scratchboard technique and this tale harkens back to stories of James Bama's originals being x-rayed by collectors to confirm that his hyper-realistic paintings were not simply a light coat of paint on top of a photograph.

Over 150 people, some coming from as far as away Maryland and Texas, made their way to Great Smokies North Carolina to spend some time with Judy in September. As impressive as her style is, technique alone won't draw this kind of following. It is Judy's passion for wildlife, native americans and conservation that gives the life to her paintings that collectors connect with so passionately.

Soysambu Conservancy

For Simon, Kat and Guy Combes, the Soysambu Conservancy was more than a conservation effort: for many years, the artists called the conservancy home. The preserve, located just below the equator in Kenya, includes in its mission working to "...sustain wildlife species, indigenous livestock and habitat; support local conservation initiatives; facilitate neighbouring development and educate the community in the value of flora and fauna, in order to preserve the Rift Valley Ecosystem for the benefit of future generations."

Soysambu, which means "place of the brindled rock," is home to four diverse ecosystems, including over 450 species of birds and over 40 semi-endangered Rothschild giraffes. The Conservancy is a non-profit organization and is always in need of donations of time and funding.

Daniel Smith wins People's Choice Award

Dan Smith is far to modest to toot his own horn, but we're happy to! Dan has just won the People's Choice award at the National Museum of Wildlife Art's Western Visions show.

This has been a banner year for Dan. In addition to the People's Choice award, he also debuted as the first-ever recipient of the Eiteljorg Museum's Artist of Distinction, and his works were the star of the recent Jackson Hole Art Auction.

Flick Ford in Canada

Artist and angler Flick Ford spent this week on Gods Lake in the remote backcountry of Manitoba, Canada with members of Angling on the Fly to do some fly fishing for lake trout and northern pike. The area is renowned among conventional anglers for producing giant "Lakers" up to 50+ pounds. Flick was also looking for brook trout in Gods River. The group was hosted by Gods Lake Lodge owner Robert Gates.

Flick and Robert landed some really nice brookies, three of which were master-angler size (over 20 inches). Flick topped this list with his 23.5 inch brookie that he fooled with his personally-tied, articulated "meat" leech pattern.

Duck-Gate Flaps its Insidious Wings in Boise!

"Duct-taped duck is animal abuse, not art

In the Aug. 31 paper, we noticed an advertisement on Main 21. It was Gallery 601, with the address at 211 N. 10th St. Who in their right mind would title or submit a photo or painting with a duck that has been wrapped with duct tape and call it art and stating, "Come Join the Fun." We feel this advertisement is very offensive and that the artist should be psychologically evaluated.
It wasn't too long ago where this same action was literally done by local kids who had brought the goose or duck to school also duct-taped. This action was addressed by animal protection services and the kids were suspended. The local television news team had broadcast this abuse, and now you are endorsing this? The local newscasters said the duck was injured and in the care of the Idaho Humane Society.
Although art is a broad subject, some things are not appropriate subject matter. You wouldn't show a picture of a woman with a black eye and say, "Come Join the Fun," would you? Please address this matter accordingly. "

Well, as Douglas Adams wrote: If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands. Film at 11:00!

Alan Bean Exhibit at the LBJ Library

Alan Bean: First Artist to Visit Another World opens at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum beginning October 1st of this year. The opening of this art show and another exhibit To the Moon: The American Space Program in the 1960s will be celebrated with a panel discussion entitled Return to the Moon. Alan will join several NASA experts to discuss man's past, present, and future on the Moon. Curt Walters named Eiteljorg's second-ever Artist of Distinction

Dan Smith's one-man exhibition has only just been unveiled, and now we know we can look forward to Curt Walters artwork hanging in the Eiteljorg's Paul Gallery next September. Walters was named the Artist of Distinction for the excellence of his orignal art offering at this 2008 Quest for the West art show at the Indianaoplis museum. The Eiteljorg is regarded as one of the most important art museums in the mid-west, so a solo exhibition at this institution is a significant honor for any artist. At Greenwich, we couldn't be happier: two for two on the Artist of Distinction. Here two of the works Curt presented (upper left) Edge of the Storm and ( lower right) Evening's Dance of Light.

Terpning to Be Inducted into Marine Corps Combat Artist Hall of Fame

In January of 1968, while on deployment as part of the Marine Corps Combat Art Program, Howard Terpning was on patrol with a group of Marines in the area of Hoi An, a town about twelve miles south of Da Nang, when the patrol was ambushed in the sand dunes by the Viet Cong.

Following the ambush, Howard created a series of paintings and drawings of the Bravo 3 (CAP Unit) reaction and encirclement of the Viet Cong. Moving Up, the best-known image of the group, depicts a grenadier and rifleman maneuvering across a dune to get into a better firing position during the counter-attack. The image was published as a print, most likely known only to Marines (or in my case, sons of Marines). My father hung it in his home office as do I in mine today. The print is one of my most prized possessions.

On September 11th , Howard Terpning will be inducted into the Marine Corps Combat Artist Hall of Fame at the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Virginia. “Go to war. Do art” is the driving rule of the Marine Corps Combat Art program.

Dan Smith at the Eiteljorg Museum

Wildlife artist Daniel Smith kicks off September at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art’s first ever Quest for the West Artist of Distinction. His one-man exhibit Animal Magnetism: The Wildlife Art of Daniel Smith opens in the museum’s Paul Gallery during their annual Quest for the West Art show and Sale (Sept. 4-Oct 6) and will hang through December 7 of this year.

Dan was selected for this honor by having the best overall display of artwork at the 2007 Quest Show. The exhibit features paintings from throughout Dan’s career and is a great space in which to view them. Dan’s new paintings at this year’s Quest for the West are:
